Great review. Thank you! It's been four years now, so did it stand the test of time?
It's held up well. It's a good quality, durable saw. The Dewalt is a better engineered saw but this one is small and sets up fast.
Great information on how to make sure you have enough material, or in some cases, not too much, in areas to create a uniform level/and or flat floor. You should definitely create a video showcasing how to prep, layout the grid, pour, move the material, and finished floor at the end! Alot of youtubers show them pouring it but do not show the level/flatness at the end, because I'm guessing it really is neither of those when they don't take the time to do it right.
Anyones knows what kind of pain should i use for this type of board??
They have their own shower pan system now but it would be compatible with other systems too
@DIYTileGuy I sorry but I was trying to say paint.. Is because I used the board on ceiling but now I want to know what kind of paint PAINT I hope you can answer thank you sr
Hey! I have a couple questions if you don't mind! What kind of mesh tape did you use at the bottom by the tub flange? I see there are different mesh tapes for different applications, cement board etc. Also, I'm going to tile the bathroom floor using a Schluter ditra decoupling membrane - Recommendations on how to waterproof between the membrane and the bottom of the tub skirt? Thank you! Finally, I want to significantly improve the waterproofing in my entire bathroom, including the walls. Any recommendations on this?
I think a better way of sealing the tub flange is to use a banding and seal it to the tub flange with the backer board sealant. This same sealant can be used to seal in-between the bathtub and uncoupling membrane and elsewhere. Also, the banding can be used to cover the uncoupling membrane seams and flashed up the wall if you really want to waterproof your floor well.
Awesome. Thank you.
Can you convert what is 1 quart
Google says it's 0.946 liters
Thank you
How do I know how much thinset to mix? I need to cover a 10 sqft area, using a 1/2 in trowel. The tiles are on the larger side so I was also planning on back buttering the tiles.
You'd probably need 3-4 batches, in all.
I am concerned that when using the 1/2 x 1/2" notched trowel that you need at least 1/4" room to wiggle the tile sideways when setting itand that's fine for all tiles except when you get against the end of a row and the last tile only has 1/8 "against the wall and 1/16 on the grout line against the previous tile on the other side. Then you cannot wiggle sideways to collapse a 1/2" ridge. I thought you could change the ridges directions horizontal for that tile so you can wiggle forward backward instead of sideway but now your ridges extend the full length of the LF tile and that is more risky to leave trapped air. I am preparing to install 15"x30" porcelain tiles 11 mm thick and hesitate between trowel sizes. If you could pitch in would be good. Thanks
Use a 1/4 x 1/2 instead
I have a bag of cement can I make thin set from the cement?
You'd need to research the ingredients but portland cement is one component that you need.
Just curious, why would you use tape for the tub joints but not corners? Great video!
It's not required for the corner but you could use it there too.
so wouldn't it be a good idea to use mesh tape into the joints with the sealant. and in the corners to make it stronger
Yes, it can help with strength but it's not required.
What size trowel for an 8x8 tile?
1/4 x 3/8 maybe?
Schluter Allset ratio is incorrect, consistency was like soup
thank you for your video: munch appreciated!!!
If you are a tile guy, I must be Jesus Christ
It’s not rocket science.
Great video. What were the vertical gray shim pieces for?
This are drywall shims to flatten the walls before installing the board
@@DIYTileGuy How many (drywall) shims would you be comfortable with before sistering or running wood furring strips?
@diytileguy in some areas it would require us to go with 1 5/8" screws vs the 1 1/4"
Have you added Mapei Kerabond premium to the list yet?.
Edit: I'm wondering if you're referring to Kerbond T? If you're referring to Keraflex Premium you might try the instructions for the Plus and see how that works. Further, Plus will work for most of the tiles you want to install. Premium would be for certain situations, like exterior tiling, for example.
Edit again: it looks like there is a Kerabon premium. I didn't know that existed. I will look into it.
@@DIYTileGuy Nice!, yeah I did my first batch yesterday. It says on the bag to do 6 to 7 quarts water to a bag (50lb/22.7kg.). So I just divided 50lbs by 6 to get 8.33 pounds to 1 quart, but I found I had to add a bit more water to get the consistency right, as it was definitely too dry. So I'd say maybe 1-1/2 quarts to 8.3 lbs. But yeah that worked out to be about right for me. Maybe if a guy tried 7lbs to 1 quart, then that would be a good starting point. :)
Mapei Kerflex Plus By volume: 3 Parts Water 8 Parts Powder I experimented with many ratios This recipe works amazingly.
This is the 1st video that has actually given me a quick straight answer I was in need of. Use 1/2 inch trowel for 16 inch and larger tiles. Thank You. The HD floor guys in the store near me are mostly not trained to answer anything but the most basic questions.
I see you are using a Dewalt. How did you like the Delta? Assuming you prefer the Dewalt?
This is the bigger, 36 inch Dewalt. I still use my Delta 7. The Dewalt is a better saw but the Delta has been durable and I like the size of it. I'd probably still buy it over the d24000 but I'd like to see what else is out there.
He tried. People got to remember, tile guys are human too.
I just mix it by eye. I add to water and mix until I get the consistency I want. Not rocket science.
How come you don’t use the flat 1 1/4 washers designed for that board?
They're not required and I don't care for the washers with Goboard. They don't really suck in like they do with cement-coated foam boards. I prefer the bigger-headed Goboard screws. There are situations where you need the washers, though.
Thank you for posting I will try this soon
Thank you, for your expertise, Sir ,
I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Our findings highlight the potential risks and structural integrity issues that can arise from omitting wood blocking, even with the most reliable materials and techniques. Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked. I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community!
I agree. Wood blocking for grab bars is a good decision.
I would think you need blocking for grab bars regardless of what kind of backer you use.
I want to install new 12x12 tiles in the bathroom of my new house....old house but new to me. I didn't even know that you had to put in lines. I'm getting from this video that I'd use a 1/4 for my purpose?
I'd probably try a 3/8 inch notch trowel first and see how that goes
can you add to your cheat sheet Ardex X5
Yes. There will be some updates to it in the coming months

Welcome back! Since you’ve been gone your video about 1/3’s saved my butt on a bathroom remodel.

Worst website ever. Chart behind ads and a registration.
Hey James, I just wanted to thank you for your great video on how to mix a small batch of thinset mortar. The mortar I used was Custom Versabond LFT and your cheat sheet was right on the money. It couldn’t have been easier once I tracked it down on your website. Your tips and tricks also came in handy for a DIYer like myself. Thanks again, Mike
I was told to use a 1/4 x 3/8 trowel for 3x12 "subway" tiles and it seems too deep. Might it be better to use 1/4x1/4?
Could go either way depending on the tile. You'll probably have to experiment and see which one works the best
tf bro? why would you not show the measurements
Do you still use mesh tape at the flange or have you switched over to the GoBoard tape? Also, do you now use GoBoard washers in conjunction with the fastners? Thanks!
I have switched over to the seam tape but i don't like washers with this board. They don't really sink in like they do with Wedi.
Thanks for your response!
Works everytime
F the membrane, waste of time & money. Use GoBoard, window seal caulking on the seems & screws, then red guard. Cheaper, better, less weight on the wall and faster.
Where did you get the long shims that the go board goes into to cover over the tub flange?
Drywall shims in the drywall section of the hardware store
Thank you
Great video!
Thank you
Does the henry stuff need plywood to be primed?
Not usually
Show us the cheat sheet instead of having us go somewhere else, if you make it even more user-friendly, then you might get more subscriptions. Some of the good learning woodworking websites that I use consistently have over 1 million subscribers. Usually because they don’t have a lot of baloney they just show you and teach you what you need to know without going through hoops.
How can he just show the cheat sheet? Can he upload it into the video as a PDF??
@@nobodydoingunimportantthings he is purposely hiding the numbers with his pencil so you have to go to his broken website. Just show the complete chart in the video.
I’m sorry dude but I went to your website for the cheat sheet and it wanted me to sign up for something with my email, not very user-friendly.
Thank you! My problem is the tile vibrate then moves during the cut, difficult to cut a perfect line.
How do I mix a small batch of mapei mosaic and glass mortar?
I like this product and your demo. I have a question about an observation at time marker 6:11 - 6:17. As you are screwing in the next section I notice you have strip(s) of, for lack of a better term, 'foam backer' pieces stapled to the stud(s). But there's another piece sort of loose material behind the board as you drive in the first top screw. Is it the same material & why?
